You have probably heard the
saying, "He bit off more than he can chew" in regards to someone taking
on a task bigger than they can handle. Jonathan Kozel had good
advice on this very topic when he said, "Pick battles big enough to
matter, small enough to win."
The things you do need to be important, but realistic. You need
to know that a task you choose can be completed. You may need
others help or you may need to learn something new to finish what you
start. The key is not overwhelming yourself with too much.
Sometimes is simply a matter of agreeing to do too many things.
People "know they can depend on you" so they dump everything in your
lap. That is fine if you in turn can delegate tasks to others,
however, be sure what you keep to do yourself are "small enough to
win". Know that you can finish what you start.
